The Portsmouth Square Garage Celebrates 60 Years of Service to the Chinatown Community!
Over sixty years ago, San Francisco’s Chinatown business and community leaders banded together to establish the Portsmouth Plaza Parking Corporation, a nonprofit corporation. Our community leaders recognized the need and desire for convenient, affordable parking to attract visitors and tourists to boost the local economy in Chinatown. With their own personal money, they investigated the viability of building the Portsmouth Square Garage by planning for private financing and construction and hiring attorneys, architects, and engineers for studies, even before the plan finally won support and approval by the City and County of San Francisco. Portsmouth Square Garage remains a treasured community institution and continues to significantly benefit our community today.
The Portsmouth Plaza Parking Corporation’s Board of Directors hosted a celebratory dinner to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the opening of the Portsmouth Square Garage in 1962. The dinner, which took place on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 6:00 PM at the Far East Café, launched a series of events to commemorate this major milestone in the Garage’s history. During the dinner event, the Board honored the founding Board members whose vision and leadership have left such an important legacy for future generations.
